Anti-Spam Update

Postby Ross » Mon Mar 18, 2013 2:08 pm

Hi all,

I've installed a new mod onto the forum of which checks new users / posts against databases for spam etc, hopefully this will reduce the amount of rubbish that gets through.

If you notice anything different about the forum / have any difficulties with any options please do let me know!

Thanks,
Ross.

Well the anti spam filter is making a huge difference!

Has anyone noticed any problems / differences on the forum like posting? viewing topics?

Ross.

I couldn't really say as I haven't been here long and the update was only put in place last night, but how often did you have to delete spam posts? Was it a daily issue?

Yup daily but I caught most of them before any of you probably even saw ;) We're now linked to 10 or so anti-spam blacklists so it'll be rare they get through hopefully!

I was more worried about the PHPBB mod code altering / messing up things on the forum. It's doing its intended job fantastically, saving me a lot of work!

10! I'm lucky to have registered first then ;)
It's good to see it works though, I used to have a test forum completely seperate from the public one where I would add/break different things. Might be something to consider, depending on whether you have many changes lined up or not. :)

haha, it also checks posts not just registration so you wouldn't be able to post if you were a known spammer ;)

I have a private forum me and a few friends use and I did test it on there first to make sure it didn't break everything :P but I was just wondering if there were any little bugs or anything I'd missed!

I run a similar website on another subject and had terrible problems with bots etc changing scripts on the site even though it was password protected for users. The biggest improvement was after I had installed and configured PHP Firewall (http://www.php-firewall.info). If it helps, I'll send you a copy of my file which removes most of the Far East and Eastern European offenders. I also found it essential to set config.php to read only and change it back if you need to make any changes; depends on what the requirements of phpBB are - I don't use that one.

Hi Roger,

Thanks for that! :-) I'll take a look at the site when I get a spare min or two :-)
