Gen 3 owners please read! Camshaft Issue (Diesel)

Just picked up my Mazda 6 today after engine refurbishment.

I can confirm that car is more responsive to accelerator, brakes work better and fuel consumption went down.

Also I received extended warranty for engine 4 years /100000 miles

Kiffyt can you give us your last 6 digit of your VIN - mine is 138*** and it is in range


I attached letter I received today from Mazda Uk Customer Relations Manager:


''Dear Mr.

Thank you for your recent communication with Mazda Motors UK.


As agreed in our telephone conversation of 24th November 2014, I would confirm in writing the findings from the assessment of your Mazda6, once the repairs were complete and the vehicle returned to you. Having spoken with your dealer, [dealer name] Mazda today, I understand you collected your Mazda6 earlier this morning, which I am pleased to learn.

Having assessed your Mazda6, [dealer name] Mazda found that the camshaft had suffered from levels of wear that are not expected at this stage in the engine’s life.

In view of the above, I would like to assure you that the associated repair process is extremely thorough and ensures that all aspects of the engine are checked. If the integrity of other components has been compromised as a result of this incident, these components are replaced without question, to ensure the longevity of the engine is restored. This was indeed the case regarding the turbo fitted to your engine, as although this component may have been serviceable for some time yet, it was agreed that it should be replaced as a precautionary measure.

We are confident the repair has successfully eliminated all aspects of premature wear and that due to the fitment of enhanced components, reoccurrence of this issue will not be seen.

Whilst noting the above, I accept you have some apprehension over the reliability of the engine and therefore we are also confident to extend the warranty cover on the engine alone for the 4th year/100,000 miles (whichever occurs first). This letter can be kept as a record of our commitment, however; this guarantee is subject to your Mazda6 being maintained in accordance with Mazda’s recommendations.

In closing, I am sorry it has been necessary to contact us under these circumstances, however; I thank you for bringing this to our attention.

Credit where credit is due, a good company is one that deals with problems in the correct way, this gives me confidence that investing in Mazda was a good move

Many thanks for sharing that letter Damtom and I ditto fright's comments. Perhaps the club should retain similar Mazda letters on a seperate thread, for members reference if needed - what's your feeling on that?

I'm assuming that as my VIN's last 6 digits are 175### my car should have an upgraded camshaft fitted - but without confirmation of that, who knows?

Note:

Even though I live nearly 100 miles away, I have been in contact with the Mazda dealer (oldest one in the UK and do not sell other makes). They are very close to the Mazda UK HQ and service all of their company cars, thus they are on excellent terms with Mazda at all levels of the organisation. In July next year, when my first service is due, I shall be taking the car to them, especially as they are discounting the price by 10% to get my custom. At least I will have comfort in knowing that their mechanics are Mazda trained and not Vauxhall, Ford, etc.

Your car is well out of defect range. Up to 148*** there is a problem.

But yesterday in Peterborough area Mazda 6 with 14 reg caught fire. Let's have a hope that the owner of that car belongs to our forum community and he/she will share what caused the fire.

Car fire - A141 - Huntingdonshire

04 December 2014, 7.43pm

At 7.43pm on Thursday (4) one crew from Chatteris was called to a fire on the A141 near Warboys.

Firefighters arrived to find a car on fire. Wearing breathing apparatus they extinguished it using hose reels and returned to their station by 9pm.

The cause of the fire was accidental.

Yeah but recall is for car from 2010-2012 , not 2014 model so still another mystery.

I can say that my Mazda is now officially affected by this issue.
Vin 139*** and at about 9000miles.

Another user then. Just to comfort you, after repairs your Mazda will be even better.

If you are keeping Mazda for some time then you should ask for extended warranty for engine. 4 years /100 000 miles

Thanks damtom85, what should I expect after repairs? I never noticed anything degrade so having the low oil warning was a surprise.

I do plan on keeping the Mazda for some time, who should I speak to for the extended warranty? Dealer or Mazda customer services?
